Nobody thinks of the dog bowl as a climate decision. It is just dinner. But feed a dog every day for fifteen years and it quietly adds up, and most premium dog food is built on the same resource-hungry meats driving emissions on our own plates. Turns out our pets are a much bigger part of that picture than anyone likes to admit.
Your dog has a carbon pawprint
A landmark UCLA study did the sums and they are not cute. In the United States, dogs and cats are responsible for roughly a quarter to a third of the environmental impact of all animal agriculture, and cough up as much as 64 million tonnes of CO₂-equivalent every year. That is a national-scale footprint coming out of the food bowl. One big dog alone can be on the hook for around 770 kg of CO₂e a year, which starts to rival a small car.
The point is not to guilt-trip your dog. The point is that what goes in the bowl actually matters, and it happens to be one of the easiest things in the whole house to change.
The number that started Grover
This is the comparison that kicked the whole thing off. Same job, a kilo of protein in the bowl, wildly different bill for the planet.
Sixteen times lighter. That is about the gap between idling a V8 LandCruiser at the lights and coasting downhill on a pushbike. Both get the tail wagging at dinner. Only one of them costs the planet a small fortune to serve.

Why is wild carp this low?
Because nobody farms it. There is no feedlot, no cleared paddock, no irrigation, no fertiliser, no methane-belching herd, and no shipping it in from the other side of the world. The carp are already here, in plague numbers, doing damage to the Murray-Darling. Catching a wild fish carries a fraction of the carbon of raising red meat for the same protein.
If anything, the maths runs the other way. Every kilo of carp we pull out is a kilo of invasive pest taken off a struggling river. The premium protein in the bag is basically a by-product of an environmental clean-up.
The catch? There isn't one.
Low-impact food usually means a compromise somewhere: less protein, cheaper filler, a corner quietly cut. Not here. How much lower-carbon is Grover than regular dog food?
Our wild carp comes in at about 1.8 kg CO₂e per kg of meat, versus roughly 28.7 for beef and 4.1 for chicken. That makes carp around 16 times lower carbon than a beef-based food, per kilo of protein.
Why does wild carp have such a low footprint?
Because it is caught, not farmed. There is no feed, cleared land, irrigation, fertiliser or methane involved the way there is with livestock. Catching a wild fish carries a fraction of the carbon of raising red meat.
Is fish always more sustainable than meat for dogs?
Not automatically. Sourcing matters. Grover uses invasive carp that is already harming Australian rivers, so removing it is a net positive. That is different from intensively farmed fish, which can carry its own footprint.
Does buying Grover actually help the environment?
Yes. Every bag uses wild-caught carp pulled from the Coorong and Murray-Darling, where the species makes up as much as 90% of the fish biomass. Removing them helps native fish and water quality recover.
